BICYCODE : a simple and efficient bike coding system

We do not provide a complete translation of our web site, but this summary gives you an overview. Our coding system is inspired from the Danish standard. It is easier to handle than the bike coding systems operated in Germany and Belgium, and could be extended at european level. Our system can be made compatible with bike coding by manufacturers, as in Denmark or Netherlands.

WHY a bike coding system

In France, every year 400'000 bikes are stolen. Theft is estimated to be responsible for the "loss" of 80'000 cyclists per year. Approximately 1 / 3 of stolen bikes are eventually found, but nobody knows how to give them back to the owner. Except for coded bikes ! Up to 40% of stolen bikes are recovered by the cyclists in Denmark.

HOW Bicycode works

  • each bike is coded with a unique number, independent of the cyclist personal data, and it has its own password.
  • like in Denmark, Germany and Belgium, the bike number is engraved on the bike frame, since this method has been proven to be efficient, and unfortunately necessary. The cyclist receives his/her Bike Passport.
  • the cyclist has to report on this server whenever the bike changes of status: stolen, recovered, or destroyed.
The cyclist must also report to the Police. For safety reasons, and according to privacy laws, our server will not display personal data, but the address & telephone of the Police department who recorded the facts and personal data. Only the Police, the FUBicy office, and in some cases the cyclists' insurance, can read the complete data.

AND THEN

  • if someone finds a bike, either abandonned or for sale, he/she may check the bike status immediately, either by internet or by phone (see upper left area of this page). This will make it harder to sell stolen bikes.
  • if a cyclist sells or gives his/her bike, he/she just has to give the Bike Passport to the new owner.
  • if a cyclist looses his/her Bike Passport, he/she may retrieve the password by mail at the address registered when the bike was coded (optional).

RESULTS :

Bicycode was initiated by the FUBicy, french federation of urban cyclists, in june 2004, with the support of Fondation Transdev, DSCR - Minister of Transports, and 7 cities. In april 2008, the service is available by 86 partners in 70 ciites. Our partners are associations, municipalities, velostations and bike retailers. They have to buy or rent the engraving machine, and they order bike numbers + passports to FUBicy.

The number of stolen bikes is still too small to draw definitive conclusions, and the statistics vary from town to town. Overall, between june 2004 and march 2008, approximately 1.5% of 33'000 engraved bikes have been stolen and 6 to 9 % of the cyclists got them back.

GOOD to recover your bike, even BETTER to keep it with you !
  • Buy a good lock ! REVV, a FUBicy local group settled in Valence, is responsible for our locks break tests. You may download our tests results (PDF 843ko). For more information and updates, subscribe to our magazine Vélocité.
  • Anchor your bike frame to a fixed device: bike park, barrier,...
  • Always lock your bike, even for a short time.
